What to Expect During a Session

Kelly McHugh | MAY 15

what a session is actually like

A little walk-through, if you've never done this before.

The most common note I get from someone before their first session is some version of: I'm curious, but I have no idea what I'm walking into. Fair. Energy healing isn't on most people's mental shelf next to massage or therapy, even though it sits comfortably alongside both. So here — informally — is what an hour with me usually looks like.

before you come

Wear something soft and easy to lie down in. Layers help — some people warm up on the table, others cool down. Eat a real meal an hour or two before, drink water, and if you can, give yourself a few quiet minutes between whatever you were just doing and walking through my door.

You don't need to bring anything, prepare anything, or know anything in particular about energy work. You don't need to believe in it for it to work — only to be willing to lie down for an hour and see.

the first few minutes

We talk briefly. Not a clinical intake — just a check-in. What's been heavy lately. What you'd like to soften, or set down, or sit with. Sometimes people arrive with a clear ask. Sometimes the answer is just "I'm so tired, I don't even know where to start." Both are completely fine.

I ask a few practical questions (recent surgeries, injuries, anything I should know), then you settle onto the table — fully clothed, shoes off, blanket if you want one.

on the table

What happens next is harder to describe well, partly because it's quieter than people expect. I work with my hands resting lightly on you or just above the body, slowly moving through different positions. Sometimes I stay in one place for a while. Sometimes things shift more quickly.

What you might notice:

  • a deep, almost-sleep kind of relaxation

  • warmth, tingling, or a gentle weight in certain places

  • emotions surfacing without an obvious trigger — anything from quiet tears to a kind of unexpected lightness

  • nothing in particular, just an hour of rest

All of those are normal. None of them is the "right" experience. The body takes what it needs and lets the rest pass.

A lot of people drift partly asleep. Some people cry, and afterward say they didn't realize they were holding onto those emotions. A few people don't feel much during the session itself and then sleep harder that night than they have in months. The work doesn't always reveal itself in the room.

coming back

The last few minutes are slow on purpose. I let you lie there for a bit, hand you a glass of water, and we talk — gently, only if you want to — about anything you noticed. There's no homework. There's no "you should feel X by tomorrow."

the hours and days after

This is the part I always want people to know. The session itself is one hour, but the settling tends to keep going. People often tell me about:

  • sleeping more deeply that night

  • waking up with more clarity on something they'd been turning over

  • noticing tears for something that's been sitting unprocessed

  • just generally feeling more here — less braced

Drink extra water. Move slowly if you can. Be a little gentler with yourself for a day or two.

one more thing

Energy healing doesn't replace medical care or therapy — it sits alongside them. If you're walking through something serious, this work can be a quiet companion to the other care you're getting, not a substitute for it.

If you've been curious about a session but waiting for the right time: the right time is usually when you start wondering if there is one. I'd love to meet you on the other side of the door.
